Feeding FUNdamentals, LLC: Dedicated to improving the feeding experience for both infant and parent.
Feeding FUNdamentals, LLC envisions a world in which infants are provided with the most current, evidence-based neuroprotective feeding experiences, where parents are integrally involved as primary feeders.
The mission of Feeding FUNdamentals, LLC is to advance the practice of infant feeding using evidence-based methods, with an emphasis on neuroprotective caregiving and family inclusion. We achieve this mission through research in the discipline and dissemination of the practice by developing training materials for professionals and parents as well as promoting system-wide adoption of best practices.
- Promote babies as directing partners in the coregulation/feeding conversation: Every experience leads to and influences brain development. Consequently, the quality of every feeding experience counts. The infant demonstrates, through their behaviors, whether the feeding is a pleasurable one. The infant directs the feeder to implement strategies as needed. Interventions are individualized to the needs of the infant and are fluid. As such, the feeder must be vigilant in observing and responding to the infant’s behaviors throughout the feeding. Quality feeding experiences build towards optimal volume intake.
- Advocate that parents are an integral participant during feeding experiences and SOFFITM: Parents and other Primary Caregivers are the most important and consistent people in the infant’s life. They will be the ones to continue supporting the infant’s skill development past the initial hospitalization, and throughout childhood. Parents are offered education as needed every step along the way, beginning at birth and continuing past discharge from the hospital.
- Lead practitioners to seek evidence to drive their practice: For infants born prematurely or with medical co-morbidities, the feeder’s expertise is critical. Every caregiver, professional and familial, should implement the most current evidence to ensure a pleasurable experience. Appropriate interventions are evidence-based.
- Provide solid evidence that SOFFITM works and modify the approach as new evidence emerges: The Organization will support ongoing research as to the effectiveness of the approach by collaborating with facilities who incorporate the method into their practice; this may include providing consultation regarding research design and methodology, statistical analysis, and manuscript publication. The Organization will also continually seek feedback from trainees to improve the delivery and content of the program. As new research emerges, it will be incorporated into the training and algorithm, and necessary changes will be made.
